SJM Presents “Celebration of Art & Culture ─ Artistic Lantern Festival” in Celebration of the National Day
Presented by SJM Resorts, S.A. (“SJM”) in collaboration with the Macau Artist Society and coordinated by the Macau Youth Art Association, the “Celebration of Art & Culture - Artistic Lantern Festival” officially kicked off after today’s ceremony held at Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau (“Grand Lisboa Palace”) on 28 September 2022. The exhibition, featuring nine bespoke lantern installations co-created by 14 local artists, is the first iteration of what will become an annual cultural event for Macau.
The occasion was officiated by Mr. Wan Sucheng, Director General of Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macau SAR; Ms. Leong Wai Man, Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; Mr. Ricky Hoi, Deputy Director of Macao Government Tourism Office; Ms. Daisy Ho, Managing Director of SJM; Mr. Lok Hei, President of Macau Artist Society and Mr. Lai Sio Kit, Chairman of Macau Youth Art Association. Artists participating in the festival and Macao Tourism Mascot ‘MAK MAK’ also attended to support and witness the inauguration.
Ms. Daisy Ho, Managing Director of SJM, remarked, “In celebration of the National Day, we brought together seasoned and fledgling talents in Macau to create these one-of-a-kind Chinese lantern installations from creative minds that span generations and bridge multiple genres, paying tribute to the sophistication of Chinese heritage, innovation and perpetuation of traditional artisanal excellence. These works of art celebrate our traditional family value of togetherness as well as our deep love for the country. This event will become a regular addition to our yearly calendar, through which SJM will support local creative industries and draw from “tourism + art and culture” synergy to enhance the city’s reputation and attract visitors.
Mr. Lok Hei, President of the Macau Artist Society, said, “With the 73rd Anniversary of the National Day just around the corner, the Artistic Lantern Festival provides a perfect opportunity to honour the age-old Chinese tradition of appreciating the beauty of lanterns as a family activity. It also marks a time for all Macau residents and visitors to come together and enjoy the beautiful lights amid pandemic stress. Our young and seasoned artists have together created exceptional works that are truly one of a kind, showcasing the intersection between traditional art and modern creativity, and especially the importance of cultural preservation.”
Mr. Lai Sio Kit, Chairman of Macau Youth Art Association said, “As one of the most iconic symbols of Chinese festivity, lanterns can reflect regional characteristics and customs through their shapes, colours and materials. Besides lighting up the night and their festive connotations, traditional lanterns also symbolise happiness and reunion. Through collaboration with our seniors at Macau Artist Society, the inheritance of timeless traditional techniques, and the ingenuity of modern multimedia, this event merges strengths from all genres to create this dazzling and creative display. I hope that we can light up every corner of Macau and offer an exceptional cultural experience to all our citizens and tourists.”
To celebrate the National Day of the People’s Republic of China, the “Celebration of Art & Culture – Artistic Lantern Festival” event will introduce a series of engaging activities for the local community, including an artistic lantern exhibition and guided tours, interactive AR games, as well as lantern-making workshops to showcase the artisanal skills of traditional lantern art.
Guests can join a guided tour led by specially trained SJM staff to garner a deeper understanding of the concept of the event, learn about lantern art traditions, and Macau’s unique cultural features.
