SJM and Macau Holy House of Mercy Jointly launch “My ElderFriend Programme”
15 July 2024 – SJM Resorts, S.A. (“SJM”), in collaboration with Macau Holy House of Mercy, has launched the “My ElderFriend Programme” earlier in 2024. Through organising regular visits, SJM volunteers have formed friendships with the elderly residents from Our Lady of Mercy Home for the Elderly (“The Home”). This helps the elderly feel a sense of community care and promotes their physical and mental well-being, enriching their lives in later years.
The “My ElderFriend Programme” has received enthusiastic support and recognition from both SJM volunteers and the elderly from The Home. Since its launch, the number of participating volunteers has increased from 25 to 50, while the regular visits have increased from once a month to twice a month. To better understand the physical and mental health needs of elderly, volunteers are required to have social service experiences and complete trainings on elderly care beforehand. They also participated in a “My ElderFriend Programme – Caring for the Elderly Seminar” orgainised by the Macau Holy House of Mercy. Conducted by The Home’s management and experienced social workers, the seminars equipped SJM volunteers with more effective interaction and communication skills. This preparation enables volunteers to engage in more meaningful communication with the seniors and become compassionate companions for them.
The regular visits are conducted in small teams, consisting of two or three volunteers. Each team commits to visiting the same set of elderly, nurturing long-term and enriching friendships. Before each visit, the teams prepare topics and interactive activities specifically designed to engage and stimulate the elderly’s memories. During these sessions, volunteers actively connect with the elderly, listening intently as they share life stories and experiences, as well as participate in games and interactive activities that ensure the elderly feel both cared for and valued.
A team member from the SJM Volunteer Team shared his great satisfaction from participating in the programme. “It allows me to provide care and companionship to my elderly friend, enhancing the quality and enjoyment of her later years. Moreover, the experience has been incredibly fulfilling, not only deepening my understanding and respect for seniors through their shared stories and wisdom, but also teaching me valuable life lessons.”
SJM has consistently been proactive in fulfilling its social responsibilities, working closely with Macau’s community organisations to offer a variety of services and support. Moving forward, SJM will remain committed to utilising its resources to support vulnerable communities, contributing towards building a cohesive and harmonious community.
