“From society, to society” is a core value of the SJM Group. We are dedicated to supporting education, arts and culture, sports and other charitable events to benefit the residents of Macau and to encourage our employees to do likewise.
Nurturing Talents
The SJM Scholarship Programme annually awards scholarships of MOP10,000 each for ten outstanding students at University of Macau and ten outstanding students at the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies.
For children of staff, the SJM Scholarship Programme awards ten scholarships annually to students, who are each awarded MOP20,000 per year until they finish their studies (up to five years). The SJM Scholarship Programme, since its establishment in 2005, has witnessed the graduation of 117 children of staff.
SJM also sponsors the school fees of staff to further their studies at Macau Millennium College, and encourages employees to return to school by completing secondary school education at Millennium Secondary School.
Since 2014, the SJM Staff Welfare Consultative Committee has organised staff participation in the patriotic education programme in Jinggangshan, Jiangxi of China.
Arts and Culture
SJM regularly sponsors cultural events in Macau, and provides or subsidises Hong Kong / Macau ferry tickets for arts and culture groups. SJM also supports cultural activities at the Kam Pek Community Centre in Macau’s Inner Harbour neighbourhood and music performances at Macau Military Club.
Sports
An ardent supporter of the Macau Grand Prix, SJM is the title sponsor of the Formula 3 racing team “SJM Theodore Racing” and the “SJM Macau GT Cup – FIA GT World Cup”. SJM is also the title sponsor of the SJM Macau Derby at Macau Jockey Club, and a long-term sponsor of the Macau Jockey Club Charity Day.
SJM supports the sports events organised by the Sports Bureau of the Macau SAR Government, including the Wushu Masters Challenge and the Macau International Dragon Boat Races. In addition to sponsorship, SJM also forms dragon boat teams to compete in the races. Moreover, SJM sponsors or subsidises Hong Kong / Macau ferry tickets for sports organisations in Macau for exchanges in Hong Kong.
Responsible Gaming
SJM organises a series of Responsible Gaming (“RG”) promotions every year, aiming to enhance staff members’ awareness of responsible gaming. In conjunction with Yat On Responsible Gambling Counselling Centre, SJM provides RG training for its employees, including all frontline hires.
Charity & Community Activities
SJM has been the host of the Charity Auction and Dinner at Grand Lisboa since 2007, which raises funds for local charities in Macau. Donations are made to the “Walk for a Million in Macau” charity event annually with around 3,000 SJM staff and directors participating in the Walk.
In support of Macau tourism, SJM is a regular sponsor of the events organised by the Macao Government Tourism Office, including the Float Parade in Chinese New Year.
In August 2015, SJM established the SJM Volunteer Team to encourage and organise volunteer activities by employees. During 2020, over 962 SJM staff members volunteered to help the needy in society, working with such organisations as Macau Social Services Centre, Macau Special Olympics, Macau Association of the Hearing Impaired, Macau Holy House of Mercy, Caritas de Macau and Associação de Juventude Voluntária de Macau.
Support for Macau’s SMEs
SJM is a long-term supporter of local SMEs. To support the Macau SAR Government’s policy on prioritising purchases from local SMEs with focus on “Micro Enterprise”, “Made in Macau” and “Young Entrepreneur” business, SJM jointly launched the “SJM and Macau SME Procurement Partnership Programme” with the Macao Chamber of Commerce in 2016. As at 31 December 2020, 1,356 local suppliers have enrolled in the Programme.
In addition, SJM launched the “SJM provides benefits to SME restaurants in San Ma Lou and Inner Harbour Area, promoting Macau as the City of Gastronomy” campaign to support Macau SAR Government’s policy on local SMEs from August to December 2018. The campaign, by means of distributing free dining coupons to residents and visitors, aims to drive the business of local SME restaurants which have been affected by Typhoon Hato. The campaign also helps to promote Macau’s culinary culture in support of the “2018 Macau Year of Gastronomy” initiative by providing free advertising and other publicity opportunities for the participating restaurants.
Environmental Protection
SJM believes that sound environmental performance is critically important to the sustainable development of our business and of our community. The Company always keeps itself up-to-date on developments in local legislation and standards for environmental protection, and is committed to achieving a level of environmental performance that goes beyond compliance. We have established environmental policies and have communicated measurable environmental objectives to our employees, and proactively encourage them to protect the environment through training, education and communication.
Commitments to China
SJM sponsors art and culture groups from China and overseas for exhibitions and performances in Macau, and contributes transportation and Macau hotel accommodation to charity groups and associations involved in sports, arts and culture from Hong Kong, China and overseas. We have also donated extensively in times of need to various organisations on the Mainland, including relief aid for victims of natural disasters like earthquakes.
