SJM Collaborates with Youth to Visit the Elderly, Nurturing a Caring Community
22 February 2025 – On February 22, team members from SJM Resorts, S.A. (“SJM”) and youth from the Sheng Kung Hui North District Youth Service visited the Lar de Cuidados de Ká Hó of Macao Federation of Trade Unions. During their visit, they held a "Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Workshop" at the elderly home. The workshop aimed to showcase the beauty of Chinese culture, promote respect and love for the elderly, and encourage cross-generational inclusivity.
For many years, SJM has focused on promoting and enhancing the understanding of Chinese culture while fostering a spirit of ”Love the Motherland and Love Macau” within the local community. To provide local community groups with a deeper insight into China’s intangible cultural heritage, SJM organised the "Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Workshop" at the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau. Various community groups were invited to participate and engage with rich cultural legacy. The workshop received an overwhelming response from the public. This time, SJM specifically held the event at Lar de Cuidados de Ká Hó, allowing more elderly individuals to physically experience the joy of creating intangible cultural heritage handicrafts.
On the day of the event, youth from the Sheng Kung Hui Northern District Youth Work Team explained the process of making mother-of-pearl inlay and assisted the elderly in creating colorful paintings. They interacted with the seniors, sharing lively moments together. The elderly participants expressed their satisfaction with the results of their work and thanked the organisation for hosting the workshop. The youth involved were instructors from the "Youth Handicraft Instructor Training Program," a collaboration between SJM and the Sheng Kung Hui Macau Social Services Coordination Office. This was their first time visiting the elderly center to share their crafts and express care for the elderly. Since 2023, the "Youth Handicraft Instructor Training Program" has offered vocational training to young people, encouraging them to become youth instructors by leading community groups in workshops. The programme aims to provide a platform for youth to experience a sense of satisfaction through practical work while laying a foundation for their future career development.
Mr. Lei Ut Hang, Director of the Lar de Cuidados de Ká Hó, expressed that the workshop was very meaningful and that the Chinese intangible cultural heritage experience series was particularly special. He noted that these activities benefited the elderly through their vision, touch, and physical exercise. He hopes that the organisation will visit the center again in the future. SJM has maintained a close collaboration with the Lar de Cuidados de Ká Hó by donating electronic equipment, supporting the elderly in remote meditation, and arranging cultural and gastronomic tours at the Grand Lisboa Palace for the elderly and their families. These various activities aim to demonstrate care for the elderly and foster a nurturing community.
