SJM Sponsors Festival of the Drunken Dragon Perpetuating National Intangible Cultural Heritage
15 May 2024 – Deeply rooted in Macau, SJM Resorts S.A. ("SJM") is committed to protecting and promoting local intangible cultural heritage. This year, SJM continues to support the "Festival of the Drunken Dragon," deploying volunteer teams to distribute longevity rice during the event to promote this significant piece of national intangible cultural heritage. The event aims to attract more visitors to Macau by leveraging the synergistic effect of "tourism + culture."
Organised by the Macao Fish Trade General Association and under the guidance of the Office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macau SAR Government, the Festival of the Drunken Dragon saw its major performances, including a Grand Ceremony of Worship and drunken dragon lion dance, on 15 May at Senado Square. The performance teams paraded through several districts of the Macau Peninsula and SJM properties, including Ponte 16 Resort Macau Outdoor Plaza and Hotel Lisboa. SJM’s mascot, Sam the Rooster, also joined the festivities, creating a lively atmosphere that drew many locals and tourists alike. In addition to sponsoring the event, SJM arranged for volunteers to distribute longevity rice at the event venue, showcasing their commitment to the community. Ms. Angela Leong, Chairman of the Staff Welfare Consultative Committee of SJM, attended the event to show support. Furthermore, SJM promoted the festival on outdoor screens across its properties to enhance awareness of this annual celebration.
The Festival of the Drunken Dragon is a unique Macau folk tradition, listed on the "Macau Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage" in 2009 and formally recognised as part of the "National Intangible Cultural Heritage List" in 2011. SJM has long supported the ongoing development of intangible cultural heritage, not only by sponsoring the Festival of the Drunken Dragon but also by collaborating with the Sports Bureau of the Macau SAR Government and the China Macau Dragon Boat Association to host the "2024 SJM Macau International Dragon Boat Race," thereby promoting dragon boating and actively preserving and enhancing Chinese cultural traditions.
